The Brown Christmas

Poem by Neriah

The Christmas season came to town,
But not one snowflake fluttered down.
Some people smiled with festive joy,
While gloom surrounded one young boy.

He walked beside his mum and dad,
Their faces quiet, still, and sad.
They shuffled down the empty street,
While brown leaves crunched beneath their feet.

They heard some neighbours shout that day,
“Get out of here!” and “Go away!”
His parents glanced from side to side,
Then turned away and tried to hide.

They acted like they had not heard,
But sadness lingered in each word.
The boy looked down and softly sighed,
“This does not feel like Christmastide.”

He shook his head and cried aloud,
“This Christmas feels just like a cloud!
There is no snow upon the ground.
There is no Christmas joy around!”

They walked along and soon drew near
Another family standing there.
A father raised his girl up high,
As tears came falling from her eye.

“Daddy, I want snow!” she cried.
“I want it falling far and wide!
Snow for Christmas! Snow, snow, snow!
Please make the winter breezes blow!”

Her little brother stamped below.
“No snow!” he shouted. “No, no, no!”
His parents took him by the hand
And led him from the snowless land.

The first boy stared upon the ground,
But not one snowflake could be found.
“No snow, no fun,” he sadly said,
Then he took five breaths and bowed his head.

His father sighed with worried eyes,
But then his mother looked surprised.
A cheerful thought lit up her face,
And suddenly she danced in place.

“Who says no snow must spoil the day?
We’ll make our Christmas our own way!
Let’s go where golden waters reach—
Let’s celebrate it at the beach!”

The boy just gave a sleepy yawn
And stared across the snowless lawn.
“No snow, no fun,” he said once more,
Still dreaming of the snow outdoors.

His mother laughed. “Come, take my hand!
We’ll build a snowman out of sand.
We’ll make sand angels by the sea
And decorate a Christmas tree!”

The boy’s face brightened with delight.
His gloomy eyes grew warm and bright.
“I love that plan! Let’s go today!
Let’s pack our things and race away!”

His mother smiled.
His father too.
The whole town smiled as good news flew.

They built a sandman tall and grand
And made bright angels in the sand.
They laughed beneath the sunlit sky,
As sparkling waves went rolling by.

And so they found that joy could grow
Without the winter wind or snow.
Together, they made memories
Beside the warm and shining seas.

They had a beautiful,
Magical,
Spectacular,
Joyful,
Wonderful…

Brown Christmas!
